TRIP REPORT AS NO ONE ELSE BOTHERED

River Wharfe – Linton Falls to Bardon Bridge

First Club Outing of the New Year Proper

As many of the Tadpole faction had received drysuits for Christmas (older paddlers please try to keep in my day…..buffolo…..swimming with lead weights on thoughts to yourselves) we decided a run out for everyone was the way forward.

An early morning start from Askern at 7:30 was in order to head over to the put in at Linton Falls……..

A scrap ensued to negotiate the entrance of the drysuit neck seals by the Tadpoles. Several bottles of baby talc and antibacterial handgel later everyone is kitted up and ready to go.

First things first the leaders in the group decided to have a crack at Linton Falls. 100% success on the decent however, varying levels of style. The Boys opt for an eddy and a peel out down river left. However The Girls in their infinite wisdom opt for the ballsy approach and thought river right was better. Evidently Boys, PMc, MS and KJ, for once in your life you were correct – probably just as well RJ and TB can roll as the rock that must be out of play was proven to be still in play!!!! Serves us right for stopper dodging T!!!

Tadpoles and Intermediates on the water at the bottom and away we go.

A few spills later and we arrive at Appletreewick…… Everyone out…. Oh wait this isn’t it…… next bend……. Everyone out (is it me or was there an echo)…..

RJ and MS show the line to the Tadpoles and then station themselves in alleged postions of most usefulness…..

Tadpoles get a clean run and some blast back up for another go. Same cannot be said for the parents…..DW!!!!

Finally the sight of Bardon Bridge looms and another spill and show disappearance later everyone is off and heading to the Nelson (other pubs are available)…..

Final Scores have been recorded for the promised Swimmers League!

Matlock Sunday 15th January 2012

On a very cold and frosty morning, around 8am, 16 brave or crazy Kool Kayakers met at the Club to set off for Matlock. The temperature was -3 degrees, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm. These conditions do not stop KKCC from having fun, with the promise of a pleasant sunny day ahead.
On arrival at the Matlock Car Park, a fog was created by the breath of the kayakers and bank assistants. IT WAS COLD. IT WAS VERY COLD. We looked at each other in disbelief, 'are we really going to go in the water at this subfreezing temperature', everyone thought but few dare express. Slowly, we all donned our gear with hand warmers being used before we got on, rather than as we got off.
Then came the unexpected. Simmone with her warm up routine. We all thought we were on morning TV doing aerobics and we were all made to do it. Actually it was great fun, but for us oldies, it was knackering. As the routine came to an end, up popped Pete with some more excercises and fun games. After 10 minutes of this, no one was cold, we were all up for it and eager to get started.
This was the start of what was a really interesting and fun day on the river. Although the level was high, we played and learnt on what features were available, spending almost 3hrs on this small stretch of river. No surprise that we were the only Club on the river, but we are made of steel of excess fat in our Club.
Just to top it off 3 young teenagers and four adults then did the customary swim of the slalam course, to prove that to paddle with KKCC, you have to be a sandwich short of a picnic.
Great day, great group of people, all meeting to laugh about the day in the usual Matlock pub afterwards.
Swimmers!! not worth talking about it.
Paddles!! well mine is in 2 pieces
Ability!! greatly improved by all
Enjoyment!! Unexepted and Thrilling
Coaches!! Led by Nic, Paul, Simmone & Pete.... Total control and great tips all day.
Would I do it again tomorrow!! you bet I would, but back to the real world, as work beckons for the week and today becomes another quality memory to look back on over the next few weeks.
Thanks to all who took part, coached and supported from the river bank
